About
Kanzashi are hair ornaments used in traditional Japanese hairstyles. They came into wide use during the Edo period (1603-1867) when artisans began to produce more finely crafted designs. Nowadays kanzashi are most often worn by brides and professional kimono wearers such as geisha, tayu and yujo or adepts in Japanese tea ceremony and ikebana. However, there is currently a revival among young Japanese women who wish to add an elegant touch to their business suit.

Based in the UK, I have been making kanzashi for around three years. I make Hana kanzashi, also known as flower kanzashi. Flowers are created by a technique known as tsumami which means pinching. Each petal is made individually, then the petals are assembled to make flowers and leaf strands. I use traditional Japanese fabrics, silk and satin for my work. I accept commissions for weddings and special occasions. I also sell my kanzashi and the other items I make through my Etsy Shop.
